Pilates Reformer Class?
Have you ever been tempted to try a pilates reformer class?
Of course you have … that’s why you’ve landed here! Maybe you’ve heard all about it before, or maybe you know nothing - either way, let’s dive into why it might make a great addition to your regular health and fitness routine.
The Origins of the Pilates Reformer
Pilates is much more than just the latest fitness fad; it has been around for about 100 years. It was developed by Joseph Pilates, who wanted a way to help rehabilitate hospital patients whilst they were still bed bound. He attached springs to hospital beds to create resistance - and the first rudimentary reformer was born.
These days the reformer is a custom built carriage that rolls on wheels within a frame. The carriage is attached on one end by a set of springs that allow you to adjust the level of difficulty of the workout. It’s this very ability to manipulate the level of intensity that gives pilates reformer classes that bit of an edge over mat pilates sessions.
The disadvantage of reformer pilates however is that the reformer is quite an expensive - and large - piece of equipment, so it’s not something you will find in the average Redlands household!
Here at New Dawn Pilates and Yoga, we have a separate studio equipped with half a dozen reformer machines. With small group sizes, you can be assured of personal guidance and supervision from your instructor so that you get the most benefit possible from your reformer pilates session. Not surprisingly however, our reformer classes are in high demand - so we do encourage you to book early to secure your preferred time slot!
While both mat and reformer pilates are great for strengthening your core and balance. The pilates reformer class however takes it a step further and has an increased repertoire of exercises. Just because you are lying down on the reformer for most of your class, don’t be fooled; you’ll get to move and work muscles that you don’t necessarily use very often.
Before Your First Pilates Reformer Class …
That said, there are some things to be aware of before you throw yourself into that first class:
This is a strenuous class and whilst it is a low impact exercise, it can be quite intense. If you are new to pilates, we definitely recommend that you consider a mat class first, just to test the waters.
Grippy socks - those cute little socks with dots on the bottom of them (not just for babies!) - and gloves might be a good idea. Once you start sweating (and you will!), the grippy dots will help prevent your hands and feet from slipping on the machine. Also, wear appropriate, well fitting gym clothing. You don’t want baggy fabric that will get in the way of your movement.
Listen to your instructor - there’s a lot going on with a pilates reformer machine and your instructor will be giving you information about where your body should be and what resistance springs you need to be using. A quick glance around the room can also confirm that you are on the right track.
You’ll be working a lot of muscles - it’s a full body workout. It will take time and practice to develop the strength to sustain a full class. Even your wrists will start to get tired. There’s no shame in taking a break.
So now you know what it’s all about, it’s time to come and try a pilates reformer class with us here at New Dawn Pilates and Yoga. Check out our timetable or book a session - we’d love to meet you here at our Redlands pilates studio!
